Petrea volubilis is a deciduous climber grown for its impressive flowering. It produces masses of small and showy, blue flowers through summer which literally transforms the plant into a sea of colour. The foliage comprises lush, dark green leaves which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling. It will climb upwards of 3 m (or more), but is often contained with trimming. Where it has nothing to climb it will grow as a sprawling, dense shrub. Best results with this plant are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods, frost, cool climates, poor soils, and some wind. This climber is a commonly trained along fences on pergolas where it will produce a wondrous display. It also makes for an impressive groundcover provided it cannot latch onto anything.
