How to grow Parthenocissus tricuspidata in NZ

Parthenocissus tricuspidata grows best in full sun or partial shade with fertile, well drained soil enriched with organic matter. It adapts to a wide range of soil types once established. Water regularly during establishment and through prolonged dry periods. Apply a balanced slow release fertiliser each spring and mulch annually to conserve soil moisture and improve soil quality.

Parthenocissus tricuspidata care tips

Parthenocissus tricuspidata is easy to maintain and responds well to pruning. Trim during winter or after leaf fall to control growth and keep it clear of gutters, windows, and roofs. Remove unwanted shoots as required and water during extended dry periods while young plants establish.

Parthenocissus tricuspidata size, spacing, and growth rate

Parthenocissus tricuspidata typically climbs 15 to 20 metres high with a spread of 5 to 10 metres depending on the available support. Space plants about 2 to 3 metres apart when creating continuous coverage. Growth is fast, providing excellent screening and wall coverage within a few seasons.

Landscaping uses for Parthenocissus tricuspidata

Parthenocissus tricuspidata is ideal for covering walls, fences, pergolas, arches, and large buildings. It is also effective for screening unsightly structures and creating dramatic autumn colour. The dense foliage provides seasonal privacy and softens hard landscape features.
