Jasminum angulare care

Jasminum angulare is a twining, evergreen climber prized for its delicate, star-shaped white flowers and light, citrusy fragrance. It thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers a warm, sheltered location, such as against a north-facing wall or fence in New Zealand. This jasmine requires well-draining, fertile soil and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry spells, while avoiding waterlogged conditions. Support is essential, as it climbs by twining, so provide a trellis, pergola, or other structure. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Feeding with a balanced fertiliser in spring and summer promotes lush foliage and flowering. It is sensitive to frost and young plants will require protection.

How to prune Jasminum angulare

To prune Jasminum angulare, wait until after its main flowering period, typically in late summer or early autumn, to avoid cutting off flower buds. Start by removing any dead, damaged, or diseased stems, cutting them back to healthy growth. Next, thin out overcrowded areas to improve air circulation and encourage new shoots, which will enhance flowering in the next season. Trim back long or straggly stems to maintain a tidy shape and to keep the plant within its space or on its support structure. You can also lightly prune during the growing season to guide its growth along a trellis or frame. Avoid heavy pruning unless necessary for rejuvenation. If this is necessary, do it in early spring, and the plant will usually recover with vigorous regrowth.
