Hydrangea petiolaris, commonly known as the Climbing Hydrangea, is a hardy, deciduous climber. It clings to walls and the like using twining stems and aerial roots. It carries dark green, serrated leaves which are complemented in summer with clusters of mildly fragrant, white flowers. It typically grows to 10 m tall and 2 m wide but can be contained with trimmed as necessary. Best performance is achieved when planted on a well-drained site in either full sun or partial shade. The site should be reasonably sheltered and the soil slightly acidic. This is an extremely versatile plant that will provide year-round interest. It is ideal for growing against building walls, fences or the trunks of large trees, or allowed to sprawl over unsightly tree stumps or rock piles.
