Creeping Fig, Climbing Ficus

Ficus pumila, commonly known as Creeping Fig or Climbing Ficus, is a vigorous, evergreen climber popular in New Zealand for covering walls, fences, and trellises. It features small, heart-shaped juvenile leaves that mature into larger, leathery foliage. Fast-growing and self-clinging, it can create dense, green coverage in sun or partial shade. Preferring well-drained soil and regular moisture, it thrives in sheltered sites and requires pruning to manage growth. Ideal for decorative and functional vertical greening.

Features and Growth Habit

This evergreen climber grows quickly and clings firmly to surfaces with small adhesive roots. It forms a dense mat of small, heart-shaped leaves that remain attractive throughout the year. Ficus pumila is perfect for creating natural green walls or screening unsightly areas. Its ability to thrive on various surfaces, including brick, concrete, and timber, makes it a versatile option for both residential and commercial landscapes.

Ficus pumila Plant Spacing For A Wall

When a Ficus pumila plant is being used to cover a wall, the ideal plant spacing is 1 m apart. If the budget is tight, you can go with a spacing of 1.5-2 meters between plants, but this means it may take an additional year for the coverage to occur. Conversely, if fast coverage is desired, the Ficus pumila plants can be spaced 75 cm apart.

Growing Conditions and Care

Ficus pumila grows best when positioned in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained soil. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, coastal environments, humid climates, and wind. Once the plant becomes established, it is essentially drought-tolerant. It requires minimal attention, aside from occasional trimming, to keep it contained as necessary. The plants will benefit from a fertiliser application in spring, and The Plant Company’s shrub fertiliser is the best option here.

What is the growth rate of Ficus pumila?

Young Ficus pumila plants tend to put on about 30-60 cm of growth in the first year as they get established. From year two, they will generally grow 80-120 cm per year and begin to fill in the gaps between their stems on the wall. Given the rapid growth rate, they are often trimmed in summer to keep them contained as required.

Questions and Answers

Have a question about Ficus pumila (Creeping Fig)? We are here to help.

I have an old Rock wall surrounding a very large garden planted with natives. Rock wall is about 1.4 mts high. Would this be suitable for covering to keep the weeds from growing between the rocks, or would it end up smothering the natives. (Flaxes Hebes etc)

It is perfect for the wall but you may have to keep it trimmed around the natives as it will try and climb them also.
