Clematis montana Elizabeth is grown for its masses of fragrant and showy flowers. This deciduous vine features mauve-pink flowers which fade to a blush pink from spring through early summer. The flowers permeate the air with a sweet vanilla fragrance. The foliage emerges bronze coloured in spring, quickly ages to green, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. Left untrimmed it will easily grow to 12 m tall but is easily contained with trimming and can be cut back severely each winter without doing the plant any harm. Clematis montana Elizabeth prefers to grow in a full sun or partial shade position that is semi-sheltered and well-drained. It tolerates frost, dry periods, cool climates, and a wide range of soil types, barring extreme wet or dry.
