Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' (Paper Flower)

5 from 1 customers

Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii', commonly known as Paper Flower, is a deciduous climber that produces masses of showy, deep purple flowers. In cool climates it flowers during summer only, but in warmer climates it may flower throughout the year and remain evergreen. The flowers are complemented with lush, dark green foliage, which generally develops yellow tones in autumn before falling as it grows to 5 m tall and 4 m wide. Bougainvillea 'Magnifica Traillii' is perfect for training over an arch or gazebo, or allowing to ramble along a fence. Where it doesn’t have a support structure, it will grow as a groundcover and can be used for planting on a bank or the like.

How to grow Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’ in NZ

Plant Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’ in a sunny, well-drained location where it will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Choose a warm, sheltered position to protect it from frost, or grow it in a container that can be moved during colder months. Once established, it requires little water, though occasional deep watering in dry periods encourages better blooming.

Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’ care tips

Fertilise with a high-potassium feed during the flowering season to encourage vibrant blooms. Prune lightly after flowering to shape the plant and control its vigorous growth. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, as they promote leafy growth instead of flowers. This variety is generally pest and disease resistant, making it easy to maintain.

Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’ can grow 3–5 m high and 2–3 m wide, depending on training and pruning. Space plants 2–3 m apart when planting for coverage. It is a fast-growing climber in warm conditions and can quickly cover large structures when cared for properly.

Landscaping uses for Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’

Bougainvillea ‘Magnifica Traillii’ is ideal for covering pergolas, trellises, and fences with a dramatic splash of purple. Its tropical appeal makes it perfect for coastal, Mediterranean, and resort-style gardens. It can also be grown in large pots for patios or courtyards where space is limited.
