The colouring can be magenta, purple, red, orange, pink, yellow, or white, but is most commonly dark pink. It typically grows to 10 m tall and 4 m wide, but is usually trimmed to control growth and shape the plant. Bougainvillea glabra is well suited to growing on a pergola, allowing it to spill over a wall, or trained along a fence.

How to grow Bougainvillea glabra in NZ

Plant Bougainvillea glabra in a sunny, well-drained position where it receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. It thrives in warm, frost-free climates but can be grown in pots and moved indoors or to sheltered spots in cooler areas. Once established, it is drought-tolerant but flowers more abundantly with occasional deep watering during dry spells.

Bougainvillea glabra care tips

Feed with a high-potassium fertiliser during the flowering season to encourage prolific blooms. Prune after flowering to control size, shape the plant, and stimulate fresh growth. Avoid excessive watering and high-nitrogen fertilisers, which promote leafy growth over flowers.

Bougainvillea glabra size, spacing, and growth rate

Bougainvillea glabra can grow 4–6 m tall and 3–4 m wide when trained and supported. Space plants 2–3 m apart when planting in the ground. It has a vigorous growth rate in warm climates and can quickly cover large structures.

Landscaping uses for Bougainvillea glabra

Bougainvillea glabra is perfect for covering pergolas, walls, and fences with a cascade of vibrant colour. Its bold blooms suit tropical, Mediterranean, and coastal gardens, and it makes a stunning focal point in large landscapes. It can also be grown in large pots for patios and courtyards.
