Asarina scandens (Climbing Snapdragon)

Climbing Snapdragon

Asarina scandens, commonly known as the Climbing Snapdragon, has flowers that are very similar to those of the Snapdragon, and are coloured indigo, violet, pink, or white. In mild climates, this climber will remain evergreen, but in cold climates it will die down during winter to regrow when conditions warm. Asarina scandens is ideal for growing on a trellis or fence. It is also suitable as a ground cover when there is nothing to climb or for growing in a hanging basket.

Growing Asarina scandens In NZ

Asarina scandens thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers a sheltered spot protected from strong winds. It grows best in rich, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering, especially during dry spells. Being a vigorous climber, it requires support, such as a trellis or fence, to scramble up. This plant is typically grown as an annual in cooler climates, such as New Zealand, as it is not frost-hardy. For best flowering results, apply a balanced liquid fertiliser every few weeks during the growing season. Deadheading spent blooms will encourage the growth of more flowers. Asarina is ideal for containers, hanging baskets, or vertical garden features, and its long flowering makes it a popular choice for adding colour and softness to garden structures.
