'Satsuma' Mandarin (Dwarf Mandarin Tree)

'Satsuma' is a very popular Mandarin variety because of its great taste, easy-to-peel fruit, and short stature. The fruit ripens in winter and is virtually seedless, sweet, and juicy. The lush foliage is glossy and dark green, becoming adorned with white flowers in summer as it reaches 1.2 m in height and the same width. This dwarf 'Satsuma' Mandarin tree is commonly included in mixed plantings, maintained in containers, used in courtyard gardens, or grown as a specimen.

How to grow 'Satsuma' Mandarin trees in NZ

‘Satsuma’ mandarin trees grow best in full sun and sheltered locations across most parts of New Zealand. Select a well-drained soil that is enriched with organic matter. Plant in spring or early autumn, and water deeply during dry periods, especially while the tree is establishing. Mulching around the base of the tree helps to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a citrus fertiliser in spring and summer. Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape and remove any dead or crowded branches. Use frost cloth to protect young trees from heavy frost.

'Satsuma' Mandarin care tips

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil. Water deeply and regularly during dry spells, especially when fruiting. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and keep roots cool. Feed with a citrus-specific fertiliser in spring and mid-summer to encourage strong growth and fruiting. Prune lightly after harvest to shape the tree and remove any weak or crossing branches. Protect young trees from frost and strong winds for the best results.

Plant Size and Spacing

‘Satsuma’ mandarin trees typically grow 2–3 metres tall and 2–3 metres wide in New Zealand. Space trees at least 2.5–3 metres apart to allow good airflow and light penetration, which helps reduce disease and improves fruit production. When grown in containers, choose a large pot and re-pot every few years to accommodate root growth.
