Why Grow Fukumoto Oranges?

The Fukumoto Orange is known for its smooth, deep orange skin and medium-sized, easy-to-peel fruit. The flesh is sweet, juicy, and completely seedless, making it ideal for eating fresh or juicing. As one of the earliest navel varieties to ripen—often from early winter—it fills the seasonal gap before other oranges mature.

Ideal Growing Conditions

Fukumoto Orange trees thrive in full sun with protection from strong winds and frost. Plant in well-drained soil and feed regularly with a citrus fertiliser during the growing season. In colder parts of NZ, container planting or frost cloth may be required during winter.

Tree Size And Features

Fukumoto trees grow to around 2.5–3 metres tall and form a dense, rounded canopy. They produce fragrant white blossoms in spring and set fruit that matures earlier than standard navels. The compact shape makes them suitable for smaller gardens and large pots.
