How to grow Mandarin ‘Okitsu’ in NZ

Choose a sunny, sheltered site with free-draining, fertile soil enriched with compost. Protect from frost and strong winds, especially when young. Water regularly during flowering and fruiting, and apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth. In cooler climates, grow in a large container and move to a sunny, frost-free spot during winter.

Mandarin ‘Okitsu’ care tips

Fertilise in early spring and late summer with a citrus-specific fertiliser to encourage strong growth and high yields. Lightly prune after harvest to maintain shape and improve airflow. Keep an eye out for pests like aphids, scale, and citrus leaf miner, treating promptly if detected. Provide frost protection for young plants in cooler regions.

Mandarin ‘Okitsu’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Grows 2–3 m tall and wide with a moderate growth rate. Space 3 m apart in open ground or plant in large pots for patios or small gardens.
