How to grow Mandarin ‘Aoshima’ in NZ

Choose a sunny, sheltered position with fertile, free-draining soil. Incorporate compost or organic matter into the soil before planting. Water regularly during flowering, fruiting, and dry spells to encourage healthy growth and high yields. Apply mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Protect young trees from frost and strong winds until well established.

Mandarin ‘Aoshima’ care tips

Feed in early spring and again in late summer with a quality citrus fertiliser to maintain strong growth and fruit production. Lightly prune after harvest to maintain shape and remove dead or crossing branches. Monitor for common citrus pests such as aphids, scale, and citrus leaf miner. In cooler areas, grow in containers for easier frost protection.

Mandarin ‘Aoshima’ size, spacing, and growth rate

Grows to around 2–3 m in height and width with a moderate growth rate. Allow 3 m spacing when planting in the ground. Can also be grown successfully in large containers.
