What Is A Limequat?

A cross between a Key lime and a kumquat, the Limequat produces small, oval fruit with a zesty lime flavour and thin, edible skin. The fruit can be eaten fresh, sliced into drinks, or used in marmalades and cooking. It’s a prolific bearer with fruit maturing through autumn and early winter.

Why Grow Limequats?

Limequats are prized for their compact size, cold tolerance, and ornamental value. They’re excellent for container growing or smaller gardens. The fragrant white flowers and glossy foliage provide visual appeal year-round, while the abundant fruit adds a splash of colour and flavour.

How To Grow Limequats In NZ

Plant Limequat trees in full sun and well-drained soil. They prefer a sheltered position, especially in regions prone to frost. Regular watering, citrus fertiliser, and light pruning will keep them healthy and productive. They're perfect for pots on patios or planted directly into garden beds.

Size And Maintenance

Limequat trees typically grow to 1.5–2 metres tall, making them one of the most compact citrus varieties. Their neat shape and minimal maintenance needs make them ideal for beginner and experienced gardeners alike.
