5 from 2 customers

The 'Tahitian' Lime is a popular and quick-growing shrub that bears masses of medium-sized fruit that are juicy, strongly scented, and have that typical lime flavour. They begin green in summer and ripen to pale yellow in winter. This heavy-cropping, evergreen typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, but can be trimmed as necessary. 'Tahitian' Limes are commonly included in a mixed planting or maintained either in a container or in a courtyard garden.

How to grow ‘Tahitian’ Lime in NZ

Plant in a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, free-draining soil. Limes prefer warmth, so protect from frost, especially in cooler areas. Water regularly while establishing and during dry spells. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a quality citrus fertiliser in spring and summer to promote strong growth and abundant fruiting.

'Tahitian' Lime care tips

Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain a neat shape and encourage healthy new growth. Keep the root zone weed-free and top up mulch annually. Monitor for common citrus pests such as scale and aphids, treating promptly if required. In cold-prone areas, container growing allows for moving plants to a warmer spot over winter.

'Tahitian' Lime size, spacing, and growth rate

A small to medium tree growing 2–3 m tall and wide. Space trees about 3 m apart in open ground to ensure sunlight and airflow. In pots, use a container at least 45 cm in diameter and repot every few years.

Landscaping uses for ‘Tahitian’ Lime'

Excellent as a productive feature tree in gardens, courtyards, or patios. Ideal for pots and container gardens, and works well with other citrus varieties for extended seasonal harvests. Adds ornamental value with glossy foliage and fragrant spring flowers.
