'Kaffir' Lime

Makrut Lime

The 'Kaffir' Lime is a quick-growing and compact shrub that produces unusual-looking fruit. The fruit is green, warty, and inedible due to the thick rind, lack of juice, and bitter taste. This evergreen shrub typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. The 'Kaffir' Lime is commonly included in a mixed planting or maintained either in a container or in a courtyard garden.

Plant in a sunny, sheltered location with well-drained, fertile soil. Protect from frost, particularly in cooler regions, or grow in a container that can be moved indoors during winter. Water regularly while establishing and during dry periods. Apply a citrus fertiliser in spring and summer to encourage strong growth and lush foliage.

‘Kaffir’ Lime care tips

Prune lightly after fruiting or in early spring to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Keep the root zone weed-free and top up mulch annually. Monitor for common citrus pests such as scale and aphids, treating promptly if necessary. Container plants benefit from annual feeding and occasional repotting.

‘Kaffir’ Lime size, spacing, and growth rate

A small tree growing 2–3 m tall and wide in the ground, and smaller when container grown. Space at least 2.5–3 m apart if planting multiple trees.
