Citrus medica sarcodactylis (Buddha's Hand Tree)

Citrus medica sarcodactylis, commonly known as the Buddha's Hand tree, is a variety of citrus grown for its very unusual fruit, which ripens in winter. The bright yellow fruit is shaped like a hand and comprises solely of rind. They have no flesh or seeds but do have a lemon aroma. It grows densely with glossy, dark green leaves to about 3 m tall and the same width and can be trimmed as necessary. The Buddha's Hand tree is commonly grown as an interesting shrub with the fruit used to decorate bowls and platters, or sliced for drinks. It can also be maintained in a large container.

How to grow the Buddha's Hand Tree in NZ

Buddha’s Hand (Citrus medica var. sarcodactylis) grows best in warm, frost-free areas of New Zealand or in containers that can be moved indoors during winter. Plant it in full sun with well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Improve the soil by adding compost and mulch to retain moisture. Water regularly during dry periods and feed with citrus fertiliser in spring and summer. Protect young plants from strong winds and frost. Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape. In cooler regions, grow it in a large pot and overwinter in a greenhouse or sunny, sheltered space.

Buddha's Hand care tips

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil and protect from frost, especially when young. Water regularly during dry spells, but avoid overwatering. Apply citrus fertiliser in spring and summer to promote healthy growth and fruiting. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch away from the trunk. Prune lightly after fruiting to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. In colder regions, grow in a container and move indoors over winter.

Buddha's hand tree size, spacing, and growth rate

Buddha’s Hand trees typically grow to 2-3 metres tall and 1.5-2 metres wide when mature. They have a moderate growth rate and form a dense, rounded shape. Space trees about 2.5-3 metres apart to allow for good airflow and sunlight. When grown in pots, regular pruning helps keep them compact and encourages better fruiting.
