Growing 'Bearss' Lime Citrus in NZ

'Bearss' Lime citrus trees grow best in warm, sheltered areas of New Zealand with full sun and well-drained soil. Choose a frost-free, north-facing spot or plant in a large container that can be moved under cover in cooler months. Water regularly during dry periods, especially in summer, and mulch around the base to conserve moisture. Apply citrus fertiliser in spring and late summer. Prune lightly to maintain shape and airflow, and protect young trees from frost.

Bearss Lime Care Tips

Plant 'Bearss' lime in full sun with well-drained soil and shelter from wind and frost. Water deeply and regularly, especially during dry spells and while establishing. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed with citrus fertiliser in spring and late summer for healthy growth and fruiting. Prune the tree lightly after harvest to shape it and remove dead or crossing branches. Protect young trees from winter frosts.

Plant Size and Spacing

'Bearss' Lime trees typically grow 3–5 m tall and 2–4 m wide when mature. For in-ground planting, space trees at least 3–4 m apart to allow for proper canopy development, airflow, and ease of maintenance. If planting near walls or structures, allow at least 1.5–2 m clearance. In cooler regions, Bearss lime also grows well in large containers, where its size will remain more compact with regular pruning.
