How to grow Euphorbia horrida in NZ

Grow Euphorbia horrida in a warm, bright position with plenty of sun and very free draining soil. It performs well in a container using a quality cactus and succulent mix, or in a raised garden where drainage is excellent. Water thoroughly after planting, then allow the mix to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering greatly during cooler months. Euphorbia horrida is sensitive to prolonged wet conditions and should be protected from hard frost and winter rain. Choose a sheltered sunny site or move container plants under cover when cold, wet weather is expected.

Euphorbia horrida care tips

Euphorbia horrida needs very little care once established. Water only when the potting mix or soil has dried, and never allow water to sit around the roots. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a diluted fertiliser suitable for succulents. Repot container plants every few years into fresh free draining mix as they grow. Wear gloves and eye protection when handling or pruning, as the milky sap can irritate skin and eyes. Keep Euphorbia horrida away from children and pets. Good light, careful watering, and protection from cold wet conditions are the keys to success.

Euphorbia horrida size, spacing, and growth rate

Euphorbia horrida typically grows about 50 cm to 80 cm tall and 40 cm to 60 cm wide, gradually forming a striking clump of upright stems. Space plants around 50 cm to 70 cm apart when using them in a dry garden or succulent border. It has a slow to moderate growth rate, becoming more impressive as new stems develop from the base. In containers, size is naturally controlled by the pot. Euphorbia horrida is ideal for small spaces where an architectural succulent feature is wanted without the need for frequent pruning or watering.

Landscaping uses for Euphorbia horrida

Euphorbia horrida is perfect for cactus collections, succulent bowls, rock gardens, raised beds, and modern outdoor containers. Its upright spiny stems create a strong sculptural focal point among lower growing succulents, decorative stones, and gravel mulch. Place it near a sunny patio or entrance where its unusual shape can be admired close up. It also works well in waterwise planting designs that need bold form and texture. Euphorbia horrida brings a distinctive desert inspired feel to gardens and containers while requiring very little ongoing attention once established in the right conditions.
