Hatiora salicornioides

How to grow Hatiora salicornioides in NZ

Grow Hatiora salicornioides in bright filtered light, using an airy potting mix with excellent drainage. Use a pot or hanging basket with drainage holes and keep the plant away from harsh afternoon sun. Water when the upper mix begins to dry and drain thoroughly. Maintain a warm position with gentle airflow. Shelter outdoor specimens from frost and prolonged rain. Leave room for the stems to trail naturally over the container edge.

Hatiora salicornioides care tips

Care for Hatiora salicornioides by matching moisture and feeding to its growing season. Water when the surface of the mix begins to dry, keeping roots lightly moist during active growth. Empty saucers and avoid saturated compost. Feed lightly in spring and summer with a diluted liquid fertiliser. Remove damaged stems and check for mealybugs. Protect from frost, harsh afternoon sun, and cold draughts. Reduce watering during cooler periods without leaving roots dry for extended periods.

Hatiora salicornioides size, spacing, and growth rate

Hatiora salicornioides typically reaches about 30 cm tall and 30 cm wide under suitable conditions. Allow room for stems to extend and keep surrounding foliage clear so light and airflow reach the plant. It has a moderate growth rate under suitable conditions. Final size varies with climate, soil, container size, and maintenance. Choose a container that supports the roots without excessive unused wet mix, and leave space around the display for airflow. Check the developing plant regularly and adjust nearby planting as its natural form becomes clearer.
