Iris 'Discovery'

How to grow Iris 'Discovery' in NZ

Iris 'Discovery' grows best in full sun to partial shade with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Choose a position that receives plenty of light and does not remain waterlogged through winter. Improve the planting area with compost or other organic matter before planting, then water regularly while plants establish. Keep the soil evenly moist during spring and early summer as new foliage and flower stems develop. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth and flowering. Avoid planting the crown too deeply and allow enough space around each clump for airflow.

Iris 'Discovery' care tips

Iris 'Discovery' benefits from regular watering during active growth and light feeding in spring. Remove spent flower stems after blooming to keep plants tidy and direct energy back into the clump. Allow healthy foliage to remain until it naturally declines, then remove old or damaged leaves as required. Avoid constantly wet soil and maintain good airflow around the plant. Mature clumps can be divided every few years if flowering reduces or plants become crowded. Replant healthy sections into refreshed soil and water well until established to encourage vigorous new growth.

Iris 'Discovery' size, spacing, and growth rate

Iris 'Discovery' generally forms an upright clump around 60 to 90 cm tall in flower and approximately 40 to 60 cm wide. Growth is moderate through spring and early summer when moisture and nutrients are readily available. Space plants around 40 to 50 cm apart in garden beds to allow each clump to develop while maintaining good airflow. Established plants gradually broaden from the base and can be divided when required. Its upright habit provides useful height and structure without taking up excessive ground space, making it easy to combine with other perennial planting.

Landscaping uses for Iris 'Discovery'

Iris 'Discovery' is ideal for perennial borders, cottage gardens, mixed garden beds, courtyard planting, and feature groups. Its upright foliage provides strong vertical texture, while the seasonal flowers create a refined focal point. Use plants in small groups for a stronger display or repeat them through a border to create rhythm and continuity. Iris 'Discovery' combines well with lower groundcovers, ornamental grasses, and other flowering perennials, making it especially useful where architectural foliage and elegant seasonal colour are wanted in a structured planting scheme.
