Hyacinth 'Carnegie'

How to grow Hyacinth 'Carnegie' in NZ

Plant Hyacinth 'Carnegie' bulbs in autumn in a sunny to lightly shaded position with fertile, free draining soil. Set the bulbs approximately 10 to 15 cm deep and around 10 to 15 cm apart, with the pointed end facing upwards. Water after planting to settle the soil, then maintain moderate moisture during active growth without allowing the ground to become waterlogged. A sheltered position helps protect the flower spikes from strong winds. Hyacinth 'Carnegie' also performs very well in containers when planted in quality potting mix with excellent drainage.

Hyacinth 'Carnegie' care tips

Hyacinth 'Carnegie' is easy to care for when planted in fertile, free draining soil. Apply a bulb fertiliser in autumn or as new growth appears to support strong flowering. Water during dry periods while the plant is actively growing, but avoid saturated soil. Remove spent flower spikes if a tidy appearance is preferred, while allowing the foliage to yellow naturally after flowering. This helps the bulb store energy for the following season. Good drainage is especially important during wet weather and dormancy, and container grown bulbs should never be left sitting in water.

Hyacinth 'Carnegie' size, spacing, and growth rate

Hyacinth 'Carnegie' typically grows to around 20 to 30 cm tall in flower, with sturdy stems rising above compact green foliage. Space bulbs approximately 10 to 15 cm apart for individual planting or slightly closer in generous groups for a fuller display. Growth becomes rapid as late winter and spring temperatures rise, with foliage emerging first and the dense flower spikes following soon after. Fertile soil, regular moisture, and good sunlight support healthy growth and reliable flowering. Its compact habit makes Hyacinth 'Carnegie' particularly well suited to containers, border edges, and repeated planting.

Landscaping uses for Hyacinth 'Carnegie'

Hyacinth 'Carnegie' is ideal for spring borders, cottage gardens, pathways, entranceways, containers, outdoor living areas, and mass planted displays. Its white flower spikes bring fresh colour and strong fragrance to seasonal planting and look especially effective when planted in generous groups. Decorative pots near patios and doors allow the scent to be enjoyed closely, while repeated planting through mixed beds creates a coordinated display. Hyacinth 'Carnegie' is also suitable for cut flower arrangements, making it a versatile choice for both garden and indoor use.
