Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket'

How to grow Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' in NZ

Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' grows best in full sun or light shade with fertile, free draining soil. Plant the bulbs in autumn with the pointed end facing upwards, positioning them around 10 to 15 cm deep and approximately 10 to 15 cm apart. Water after planting to settle the soil, then keep moisture moderate while growth develops. Avoid waterlogged conditions, especially through winter. Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' benefits from winter chilling and a sheltered position, producing strong flower spikes and rich spring colour when planted in suitable conditions.

Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' care tips

Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' is easy to care for once planted. Water during extended dry periods while the foliage is actively growing and apply a bulb fertiliser in autumn or early spring to support strong flowering. Remove spent flower spikes after blooming, but leave the foliage in place until it yellows naturally so the bulb can store energy for the following season. Avoid cutting green leaves too early. In suitable soil, bulbs can remain in the ground for several years, although flowering may gradually become less dense as clumps age.

Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' size, spacing, and growth rate

Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' typically grows to around 20 to 30 cm tall when flowering, with compact foliage supporting dense upright flower spikes. Plant bulbs approximately 10 to 15 cm apart for a balanced display, or slightly closer when creating a stronger mass planting effect. Growth begins during the cooler months and develops steadily before flowering in spring. Each bulb produces a compact seasonal clump, and good sunlight, drainage, feeding, and winter chilling help Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' produce sturdy stems, strong flowers, and dependable growth from year to year.

Landscaping uses for Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket'

Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' is ideal for adding rich spring colour and fragrance to borders, cottage gardens, containers, pathways, and outdoor living areas. Its compact growth makes it particularly effective near entrances, patios, and seating areas where the scented flowers can be enjoyed up close. Planting bulbs in groups creates the strongest visual impact and works well beneath deciduous trees or among lower growing spring plants. Hyacinth 'Blue Jacket' also performs beautifully in pots and provides attractive flower spikes for indoor arrangements and seasonal displays.
