How to grow Babianas in NZ

Babianas grow best in full sun with fertile, free draining soil and good airflow. Choose a warm position that receives plenty of direct sunlight and avoid areas that remain wet through winter. Improve the planting area with compost or other organic matter before planting, then water regularly as new growth develops. Keep the soil evenly moist during active growth and flowering, but reduce watering as the foliage naturally declines. Apply a balanced fertiliser as growth begins to support healthy leaves and flowers. In colder districts, a sheltered position can help protect emerging growth from severe frost.

Babianas care tips

Babianas are relatively easy to care for once established. Water during dry periods while the plants are actively growing, but reduce watering as the foliage begins to yellow and die back. Apply a light balanced fertiliser in spring to support strong flowering. Remove spent flowers if desired, but allow the foliage to remain until it has naturally declined so the underground corms can replenish their energy reserves. Avoid constantly wet soil during dormancy. If clumps become crowded, lift and divide them during the dormant period and replant healthy corms into refreshed soil.

Babianas size, spacing, and growth rate

Babianas generally form compact clumps around 20 to 40 cm tall in flower and approximately 15 to 25 cm wide. Growth is relatively fast during the active season, with foliage and flower stems developing as temperatures and soil moisture become favourable. Space plants around 10 to 15 cm apart for a full display while allowing enough room for each clump to develop. Over time, the corms can multiply and create larger groups. Established clumps may be divided when they become congested, helping maintain strong flowering and providing additional plants for other areas.
