Alcantarea imperialis is a large Bromeliad that features thick and leathery, dark green leaves that often have purple overtones. The leaves are borne as a crown and result in plant that typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide. It may produce a large flower spike that reach 3 m tall with mildly fragrant, cream-white flowers. This herbaceous perennial grows best when planted in partial shade on a well-drained, sheltered site. It will tolerate a light frost only and should not be allowed to dry out.
