Rubus fruticosus

Blackberry

Commonly known as Blackberry, this is a prickly climber that produces the familiar, black berries. It produces white flowers in spring which result in berries that are tasty with a sweet flavour, and attract birds and other wildlife. The foliage is dark green and held on thorny stems that will easily reach 8 m if left untrimmed. The stems will root where they touch the ground which will result in this plant colonising a large area with time. This climber grows well in full sun through heavy shade and on almost any soil type, except extreme wet. It is also tolerant of frost, wind, and coastal environments. It is commonly grown for fruit production on a trellis or used as a barrier to keep people and livestock out of an area.
