Punica granatum (Pomegranate Tree)

Punica granatum, commonly known as the Pomegranate, is a shrubby plant grown for its flowers and delicious fruit. Upright branches carry large, orange-red blooms in summer, which then result in large, red fruit in autumn. The foliage on this deciduous shrub emerges bronze, then ages to green before yellowing and falling. In warmer climates, it may remain evergreen as it grows to about 1.5 m tall and the same width. Punica granatum is tolerant of frosts and cool temperatures. Use this Pomegranate in mixed plantings, for fruit production, or trim into a hedge.

How to grow Punica granatum (Pomegranates) in NZ

Pomegranates can be successfully grown in New Zealand, particularly in warmer, drier regions such as Hawke’s Bay, Northland, and parts of the Bay of Plenty. Choose a sunny, sheltered site with free-draining soil. While pomegranates are drought-tolerant once established, regular watering in summer improves fruiting. Prune in winter to maintain an open shape and encourage the growth of fruiting wood. Although deciduous, they can withstand light frosts but may struggle in consistently cold or wet conditions. A north-facing wall can aid ripening in cooler areas. Apply mulch and feed in the spring for optimal growth.

Punica granatum (Pomegranate) care tips

Pomegranates thrive in full sun and require warmth to fruit well. Plant in a well-drained soil and avoid waterlogged conditions. Water deeply during dry spells, particularly in summer when fruit is forming. Apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in spring. Prune lightly in winter to shape the plant and remove dead or crossing branches. Protect young plants from heavy frosts. Regular care improves fruit yield and tree health.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Punica granatum typically grows 2–4 metres tall and wide, though some varieties may reach up to 5 metres if unpruned. Space plants 2.5–3 metres apart for optimal airflow and fruit production. Growth is moderate, with young plants establishing over 2–3 years. Fruiting usually begins from the third year, increasing as the plant matures. Pruning helps to control the size and shape, which is particularly important for smaller gardens.
