How to grow Gooseberry 'Pax' in NZ

Gooseberry 'Pax' grows best in full sun or partial shade with fertile, free-draining soil. Prepare the planting area by incorporating plenty of compost or organic matter, then water deeply after planting. Space bushes about 1.2–1.5 metres apart to ensure good airflow and reduce the risk of disease. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture and keep weeds down. Regular watering during dry periods and a spring feed with balanced fertiliser will encourage vigorous growth and a heavy crop of sweet, red berries.

Gooseberry 'Pax' care tips

Prune Gooseberry 'Pax' in winter to remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches and to keep an open shape for better airflow. Protect fruit from birds using netting as the berries begin to ripen. Mulch annually to help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Check regularly for pests such as aphids and treat promptly if required. Feeding plants with a balanced fertiliser in spring and again after harvest will keep them healthy and productive.
