Fruit Quality and Harvest Time

Sapphire Blue berries are medium to large with excellent firmness and a sweet, tangy flavour. The harvest period is late summer, typically from December to January in New Zealand, providing fresh fruit when many other varieties finish.

Growing Conditions and Plant Size

This rabbiteye blueberry forms a dense bush about 1.5 to 2 metres tall and wide. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils (pH 4.5-5.5) and prefers full sun for maximum fruiting. Sapphire Blue adapts well to NZ’s climate but benefits from frost protection in cooler areas.

Pollination and Care

Cross-pollination with other rabbiteye varieties such as Legacy or Tifblue is essential to ensure good fruit set. Regular watering, mulching, and pruning in late winter help maintain plant health and boost yields. Use acid-loving fertiliser in early spring for best results.
