Fruit Quality and Harvest Time

Brightwell blueberries are medium to large, firm, and sweet with a well-balanced flavour. The harvest period is early to mid-summer, typically from November to December in New Zealand, giving you fresh berries early in the season. Ideal for fresh eating, baking, and freezing.

Growing Conditions and Plant Size

This rabbiteye blueberry grows into a dense bush about 1.5 to 2 metres tall and wide. It thrives in well-drained, acidic soils with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5 and prefers full sun for optimal fruiting. Brightwell adapts well to New Zealand’s climate but benefits from frost protection in colder areas.

Pollination and Care

Cross-pollination with other rabbiteye varieties such as Tifblue or Legacy is essential to ensure good fruit set. Regular watering, mulching, and pruning in late winter support healthy growth and improved yields. Use acid-loving fertiliser in early spring to boost production.
