Blueberry 'Atlantic'

Blueberry ‘Atlantic’ is a highbush cultivar prized in New Zealand for its upright habit, attractive foliage, and tasty mid-season berries. Growing to about 1.5–1.8 m tall, it bears light-blue, medium-sized fruit in summer, perfect for fresh eating, baking, or preserving. Its glossy green leaves often turn red in autumn, adding seasonal interest. Preferring well‑drained, acidic soil and full sun, it’s ideal for home orchards or mixed garden borders. With moderate chill requirements, ‘Atlantic’ performs well throughout NZ.

Blueberry Atlantic Growth and Fruit Characteristics

Blueberry 'Atlantic' plants grow vigorously, reaching about 1.2 to 1.5 metres tall with dense, leafy foliage. The berries are large, round, and sweet with excellent flavour. Early fruiting means you can enjoy fresh blueberries sooner than many other varieties.

Planting and Growing Blueberry 'Atlantic' in NZ

This variety prefers acidic, well-drained soil rich in organic matter and full sun exposure. Plant in autumn or early spring, spacing bushes about 1.2 metres apart to allow good airflow. Regular watering and mulching help maintain healthy plants and bountiful harvests.

Care Tips for Blueberry 'Atlantic' Plants

Plant Blueberry 'Atlantic' in full sun with well-drained, acidic soil rich in organic matter. Maintain soil pH between 4.5 and 5.5 for best results. Water consistently, especially during dry spells and fruiting periods, but avoid overwatering. Mulch with pine bark or other organic mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter to remove dead wood and shape the plant. Feed with an acid-specific fertiliser in spring. It is worth covering the plants with a net during fruiting to protect the berries from birds.
