Commonly known as the Coast Banksia, this is a small tree grown for its large and showy flower heads. The bottlebrush like flowers are up to 12 cm long and adorn this tree from summer through until winter. Not only are the flowers impressive but they are also great for attracting birds. The foliage is thick, leathery, and dark green on the upper surface and silver beneath. It grows with an upright, open habit to about 10 m tall and 5 m wide with best growth achieved when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate dry periods, coastal conditions, moderate frost, and cool climates but should be protected while it is establishing. This is a fantastic plant for mixed plantings, coastal gardens, and for bringing both colour and wildlife into the garden.
