Common questions about growing Helipterum
1. How do you grow Helipterum?
Helipterum are easy to grow in New Zealand. Here are some tips:
Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. They can tolerate some shade, but they will flower best in full sun.
Prepare the soil by adding compost or other organic matter. This will help to improve drainage and fertility.
Plant Helipterum in spring or autumn and water the plants regularly, especially during hot weather.
Feed Helipterum plants every 2-3 months during the growing season with a balanced fertiliser.
Mulch around the plants with compost or other organic matter to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
2. How tall do Helipterum get?
Helipterum plants can grow 15 to 50 cm tall, depending on the species and variety. Some species of Helipterum, such as Helipterum manglesii (Mangles everlasting), can grow to 1 metre tall.
Here are some examples of Helipterum species and their heights:
Helipterum roseum (paper daisy): 30-45 cm
Helipterum bracteatum (strawflower): 45-60 cm
Helipterum manglesii (Mangles everlasting): 30-90 cm
Helipterum drummondii (Drummond's everlasting): 15-30 cm
Helipterum humile (low everlasting): 15-30 cm
When choosing a Helipterum species or variety to plant, consider the desired height of the plant. Some species of Helipterum are better suited for borders, while others are better suited for mass plantings or rock gardens.
3. What is the spacing for Helipterum?
The recommended spacing for Helipterum plants varies depending on the species and variety. However, most should be spaced 15-20 cm apart. Some taller species such as Helipterum manglesii (Mangles everlasting), may need to be spaced up to 30 cm apart.
