What is a Feijoa?

The feijoa, also known as pineapple guava, is a hardy evergreen shrub or small tree native to South America but widely grown in NZ. Feijoa trees feature leathery green leaves, striking red flowers, and produce oval, aromatic fruits with a unique sweet-tart flavour that Kiwis adore. Feijoa is celebrated for its dependable harvesting from late autumn into early winter, offering structure and greenery throughout the year.

Feijoa as a Versatile Garden Plant

Feijoa is incredibly versatile in the landscape. It functions as a fruiting hedge, specimen tree, or informal screen, suiting everything from home gardens to orchards. Feijoa thrives in most NZ soils, enjoys full sun, and tolerates coastal conditions and light frosts. For best yields, plant more than one variety to encourage cross-pollination. Popular cultivars include Feijoa 'Unique', loved for its reliable fruiting, and Feijoa 'Apollo', prized for its large, sweet fruits.

Feijoas are reasonably drought-tolerant once established, requiring little ongoing care. With annual pruning, they shape well for tight hedges or can be allowed to develop naturally as compact trees. Their thick foliage provides year-round privacy for property boundaries.

Growing and Enjoying Feijoa

Planting feijoas is straightforward, making them suitable for both beginner and experienced gardeners. Their resilience means fewer problems with pests or disease, and the fruit is incredibly versatile—enjoyed fresh, in chutneys, baking, or preserves. Feijoas are a NZ favourite for good reason: they are both attractive and productive, turning any garden into a fruitful oasis.
