What Are Crocus Bulbs?

Crocus bulbs, actually known as corms, are small, rounded plant structures that store energy for the plant to burst into life as winter wanes. Traditionally among the first flowers to appear in spring, crocus bulbs produce delicate, cup-shaped blooms in shades of purple, yellow, white, and blue. Their low-growing, grass-like foliage looks attractive even after flowering, making them suitable for both formal beds and naturalised plantings.

Crocus bulbs are incredibly adaptable – plant them in well-drained soil, in full sun or light shade, and they’ll return year after year. Popular varieties such as Crocus 'Purity' deliver crisp, snowy-white flowers, while species like Crocus sativus (Saffron) are valued for their culinary and ornamental uses. With their compact size and resilience, crocus bulbs are ideal for adding pops of colour throughout your lawn, rock garden, or even beneath deciduous trees.

Planting and Garden Uses

Crocus bulbs perform best when planted in autumn, about 5-8cm deep and spaced a few centimetres apart. Choose a sunny, well-drained site to prevent rot and maximise flower production. They thrive in garden borders, under trees, and even in pots on patios or balconies. One classic technique is naturalising crocus bulbs in grassy areas, where they multiply freely for a more relaxed, meadow-like effect.
