cherry-dawson-2

Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Benefits of Planting a Young Cherry Tree

Planting a young cherry tree in your home garden brings more than just seasonal colour or fruit. These resilient trees mature quickly, establishing strong root systems and adapting well to our unique climate and soil conditions. In the early years, a young cherry tree is easier to shape, prune, and maintain. You'll be able to guide its growth and enjoy watching your tree progress from sapling to producing crop in just a few short years.

As your young cherry tree matures, you'll experience its famous pink or white blossoms each spring. Many varieties, such as Prunus Accolade, are prized for their stunning ornamental display. Then, from late spring to summer, fruiting varieties deliver juicy, flavour-packed cherries everyone loves.

Choosing the Right Young Cherry Tree Variety

Not all young cherry trees are created equal, and selecting the right cultivar depends on your preferences and conditions. If your goal is rich, sweet fruit, the Cherry Rainier is a classic yellow-skinned cherry renowned for its sweetness. For those who favour deep, red fruit, Cherry Dawson and Cherry Modesto provide exceptional flavour and yield.

If you seek a compact, bushy tree that’s ideal for smaller spaces or containers, consider the Cherry Griotella Frumi. Griotella Frumi produces tart, richly coloured cherries perfect for cooking, preserving, or eating fresh.

Planting and Caring for a Young Cherry Tree

Plant your young cherry tree in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-draining soil. Cherry trees thrive in gardens throughout New Zealand; however, they benefit greatly from mulching and regular watering during dry spells. Early training and pruning will help your young cherry tree develop strong branches and an attractive, productive structure.

Spring and autumn are the best times to plant a young cherry tree, giving it time to establish before harsh weather arrives. Be patient; with gentle care, your tree will reward you with blossoms and fruit within a few years.

Why Buy a Young Cherry Tree From Us?
