Features of the Prunus 'Shidare Yoshino'

The yoshino cherry tree is prized for its abundant spring flowers, which cover every arching branch in a cloud of pastel blooms. These blossoms not only attract admiration but also bring pollinators like bees into your garden. As a small to medium-sized deciduous tree, its weeping form reaches around 5–6 metres in height, making it suitable for both home gardens and larger landscapes. In summer, the finely serrated leaves provide dappled shade before turning soft gold in autumn.

Ideal Growing Conditions

The yoshino cherry tree thrives in a sunny position with free-draining soil. It prefers a sheltered spot protected from harsh winds, which helps preserve the delicate flowers during their peak in early spring. Regular watering throughout the establishment period is important, especially during dry spells. Mulch annually to enrich the soil and conserve moisture. Pruning is minimal; just remove dead or crossing branches after flowering to maintain its elegant shape.

Landscape Uses and Combinations

Yoshino cherry trees make a breathtaking statement as lawn specimens, driveway avenues, or focal points in mixed borders. Their graceful, cascading boughs pair beautifully with spring bulbs, textured grasses, and evergreen shrubs. For a succession of blossom and colour, consider planting alongside other flowering cherries such as Prunus Accolade, Prunus Amanogawa, Prunus Awanui, Prunus Falling Snow, or Prunus Felix Jury.

If you’re seeking textural contrast or year-round foliage, try pairing your yoshino cherry tree with structured evergreens like Pittosporum Platinum or unique deciduous trees such as Ginkgo Autumn Gold and Pyrus calleryana 'Cleveland Select'.

Caring for Your Yoshino Cherry Tree

Keep your yoshino cherry tree healthy and showy by watering deeply during dry periods, especially in the first few years. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote strong bud and flower development. Protect young plants from rabbits and mulch well to suppress weeds. With a little care, your yoshino cherry tree will reward you with a magical display season after season.

For those looking to diversify their planting, explore related trees such as Chamaecytisus palmensis or Ligustrum lucidum (Tree Privet) to complement your garden palette.

Let the yoshino cherry tree become the heart of your garden, delivering timeless beauty with every spring.
