The yellow twig dogwood (Cornus stolonifera Flaviramea) is a striking deciduous shrub prized for its vibrant golden-yellow stems, especially in winter landscapes. Adding remarkable four-season interest, this hardy New Zealand garden favourite is perfect for brightening up mixed borders, foundation plantings, and wet or problem garden sites. Its stunning upright stems light up any garden, particularly when set against evergreens or a backdrop of snow, and its versatility and resilience make it a must-have for any landscape enthusiast.

Cornus stolonifera 'Flaviramea'

Cornus stolonifera Flaviramea, commonly known as the Yellow Stem Dogwood, is a shrub that features bright yellow stems which become more pronounced in winter. The leaves emerge dark green in spring, and remain this colour until developing red tones in autumn and falling. It typically grows to 2.5 m tall and 1 m wide, and should be trimmed each year. Cornus Flaviramea is a great plant for adding to a mixed planting, as well as cluster planting to provide a dramatic winter display.

Why Grow Yellow Twig Dogwood?

Yellow twig dogwood stands out for its brilliant stem colour that intensifies as temperatures drop. While the foliage forms a lush, green contrast through spring and summer, it's in the colder months when the golden bark truly steals the show. Throughout the year, flat clusters of small white flowers appear in spring, followed by pearl-like white berries that attract native birds and add extra appeal.

If you enjoy the unique hues of yellow twig dogwood, you might also appreciate other colourful dogwoods such as Cornus 'Stokes Pink', or venture into the variegated qualities of Cornus controversa variegata.

Ideal Garden Uses and Companions

Famed for its bold winter interest, the yellow twig dogwood works beautifully in a range of settings. Try planting it in swathes for a massed effect or as a feature in a mixed border. Its tolerance for wet soils and tough garden conditions makes it a superb solution for difficult spots, including waterside settings and rain gardens.

For a well-layered planting scheme, consider combining yellow twig dogwood with contrasting species such as lush azaleas like Azalea Hatsu Giri and Azalea Purple Splendour, or the textural drama of Protea 'Franciscan'. The broad white bracts of Cornus 'Eddie's White Wonder' make an elegant pairing, or add architectural interest by including Cornus 'Cherokee Princess' and Cornus Cherokee Chief.

Planting and Care

Yellow twig dogwood is celebrated for its low maintenance needs. Plant in full sun to partial shade, in moist, well-drained soil. It will tolerate poorly drained or clay sites better than most shrubs, thriving where others struggle. Pruning out older stems in late winter helps preserve the plant’s vivid colour, encouraging new growth with the brightest yellow.

Mulch around the base in spring, and water well during dry spells in the first couple of years. While yellow twig dogwood is naturally resistant to most pests and diseases, maintaining good air circulation and removing any deadwood annually keeps your plant looking its best.

Add Year-Round Interest with Yellow Twig Dogwood

Whether you’re aiming for contemporary contrast or a classic cottage look, yellow twig dogwood brings garden drama when many plants lie dormant. Pair with spring favourites like Abutilon 'Alba' or the tropical flair of Hibiscus 'Mystic Charm' for a scene that thrives from winter through to summer. Explore our range of dogwoods and companion shrubs to create a dynamic, colourful outdoor sanctuary.
