Gleditsia triacanthos Sunburst

5 from 1 customers

“Sunburst” is an impressive, deciduous tree grown for its lovely form and colourful foliage. It carries fine and lush, yellow foliage through spring which ages to a bright green in summer, then turns bright yellow in autumn before falling. The changing foliage colour provides for great interest, as do the large, black seedpods that hang from the branches in winter. It grows as an upright spreading tree with a single trunk to about 15 m tall and 6 m wide though it can be trimmed as necessary. This is a hardy tree that grows best in full sun on a well-drained site. It will tolerate frosts, cool climates, and coastal conditions but does require a degree of wind protection to avoid broken branches. “Sunburst” makes for a lovely specimen and is ideal for adding to a mixed planting, for avenue planting, or using to border an entranceway.

Why Choose Yellow Hardy Hibiscus for Your Garden

Yellow hardy hibiscus bring an exotic burst of colour, with large, cheerful flowers that often attract native birds and pollinators. Their reputation for hardiness means they can thrive through cooler weather and handle the variable conditions many New Zealanders face. Whether you’re sprucing up a sheltered courtyard or searching for the perfect flowering hedge, yellow hardy hibiscus offer both beauty and resilience.

Many gardeners are particularly drawn to the upright form and lush green foliage of yellow hardy hibiscus. These versatile shrubs are equally at home in formal borders and informal native plantings. When choosing your plant, select an area with full sun and well-drained soil to enjoy abundant blooms from late spring through to autumn.

Popular Varieties of Yellow Hardy Hibiscus

Several standout varieties of yellow hardy hibiscus are suited to New Zealand conditions. One of our favourites is Hibiscus 'Macdelveons Yellow', prized for its stunning, buttery yellow flowers with a classic hibiscus shape. This cultivar stands out for its prolific flowering and reliable growth habit, making it a go-to choice for home gardens and landscaping projects alike.

Another exceptional selection is Hibiscus 'Fiji Sunshine', which produces dazzling yellow blooms with a bright, tropical appeal. Both of these varieties offer excellent frost tolerance compared to more tender hibiscus types, meaning your shrubs can flourish with minimal fuss.

For gardeners interested in other unique hibiscus species, explore Hibiscus hamabo, a hardy Japanese import with pale yellow petals blushed with pink, or the resilient New Zealand native Hibiscus diversifolius, known for its lemon-yellow, spiked flowers.

For larger spaces or more coastal gardens, the striking Hibiscus tiliaceus, a yellow-flowered coastal tree, is an excellent option with classic hibiscus charm.

Planting and Care Tips

Yellow hardy hibiscus thrive best in full sun and in sheltered spots protected from harsh southerly winds. Before planting, enrich the soil with compost or organic matter to encourage strong root development. Regular watering during dry spells will help keep your plants blooming, but avoid waterlogged sites, which can stress the roots.

For a compact, bushy shape, prune your yellow hardy hibiscus in late winter or early spring. This encourages fresh new growth and a flush of summer flowers. Mulching around the base helps retain soil moisture and discourages weeds.

Brighten Your Garden with Yellow Hardy Hibiscus

No matter your gardening style, yellow hardy hibiscus are guaranteed to make a sunny statement and reward you with spectacular, low-maintenance colour. Browse our range of hardy hibiscus varieties, including Hibiscus hamabo, Hibiscus diversifolius, Hibiscus tiliaceus, Hibiscus 'Macdelveons Yellow', and Hibiscus 'Fiji Sunshine' to find the perfect fit for your New Zealand garden.
