What Is Yellow Flax?

Yellow flax most commonly refers to cultivars of New Zealand flax (Phormium) that feature golden-yellow hues in their leaves. These ornamental grasses are prized for their bold colour, strappy foliage, and effortless ability to create structure in mixed plantings. Yellow flax suits both modern and traditional gardens, coastal and urban landscapes, and provides year-round interest thanks to its evergreen nature.

Popular Varieties of Yellow Flax

One of the standout choices for those searching for yellow flax is Phormium 'Yellow Wave'. This popular variety offers arching leaves striped with bright yellow and green, forming graceful clumps that look fantastic on their own or mass planted for visual impact. It reaches up to 1 metre in height and is known for its wind and salt tolerance, making it perfect for New Zealand’s coastal regions.

Other popular Phormium cultivars, while not yellow, deliver beautiful foliage and can be combined with yellow flax for a dramatic, textured look. Consider complementing your planting scheme with Phormium 'Jack Spratt', which offers compact structure and bronze foliage; Phormium 'Surfer' and Phormium 'Surfer Bronze' for their soft, flowing leaves; or Phormium 'Jester' for its playful pink-red foliage.

How To Grow and Care for Yellow Flax

Yellow flax is delightfully easy to grow. Plant in full sun or part shade for the best colour and growth. It thrives in free-draining soil and tolerates wind, drought, and even coastal salt spray. Feed with a general fertiliser in spring, and remove spent or damaged leaves as needed to keep plants tidy.

Being robust and pest-resistant, yellow flax is great for difficult spots where other ornamentals may struggle. It’s also suitable for container gardening and can be used in large planters for patios or apartment balconies.

Landscaping with Yellow Flax

Whether you’re after a statement feature or an all-season filler, yellow flax adds energy and contrast wherever it’s used. Its golden tones create a vivid focal point alongside darker or purple-leaved plants, while its upright form pairs beautifully with groundcovers and grasses. Yellow flax also works well in contemporary, native, and wildlife-friendly gardens.
