What Makes Strelitzia Mandela’s Gold Unique?

Strelitzia Mandela’s Gold is a rare cultivar cherished for its golden flower that radiates warmth and sophistication. Unlike its orange-flowered cousin, Strelitzia reginae (Strelitzia), Mandela’s Gold displays large, upright blooms that stand out among subtropical foliage. Its architectural leaves and robust growth habit make it perfect for modern garden designs or as an accent near pools, patios, or entrances. Resistant to most pests and requiring minimal maintenance, this variety quickly establishes and provides seasonal interest year-round.

How to Grow Yellow Bird of Paradise in New Zealand

Plant your Strelitzia Mandela’s Gold in a spot with free-draining soil and plenty of sunlight. It tolerates light frost and enjoys shelter from harsh wind, making it versatile in many New Zealand microclimates. For optimal flowering, feed with a quality slow-release fertilizer in spring and keep watered during dry spells. The yellow bird of paradise is well-suited for mixed borders alongside dramatic foliage and vibrant flowers—try pairing with Strelitzia nicolai (Natal Wild Banana), Strelitzia alba (White Bird Of Paradise ), or Canna Eden for a lush, tropical effect.

Landscape Uses and Companion Planting

Strelitzia Mandela’s Gold’s bold form makes it ideal for feature planting: it draws the eye without overwhelming smaller companions. In larger landscapes, use the yellow bird of paradise for sale alongside Strelitzia parvifolia (Spoonleaf Bird of Paradise) or Strelitzia augusta (White Flowered White Banana) to create layered, wildlife-friendly gardens. For a burst of colour through the seasons, complement with Alstroemeria Inticancha Sunstar (Peruvian Lily), Gentiana 'Marsha', or the silvery foliage of Senecio Bella Grigio. Try pairing Strelitzia Mandela’s Gold with shade-loving Brunnera Sea Heart nearby for a dynamic planting scheme.
