How to Plant and Care for Your Wisteria

Plant wisteria in fertile, free-draining soil in a position with full sun for the best flowering. Choose a strong support structure – trellis, fence, or pergola – as these vines can become heavy over time. Spring or autumn is the best time to plant wisteria. Regular pruning after flowering helps shape your plant and encourages abundant blooms the following year.

Water new plants well until established, then reduce frequency. Wisteria adapts to both urban and rural environments and is remarkably tolerant of wind and coastal conditions, making it easy to integrate into most New Zealand gardens.
