Why Grow Fig Trees in New Zealand?

Fig trees thrive in many parts of New Zealand, from the warmth of the upper North Island to sheltered southerly spots. They provide sweet, nutritious fruit in late summer and autumn, and their sculptural shapes add a Mediterranean vibe to Kiwi gardens. Grown organically at home, figs are fresher, tastier, and free from sprays. Plus, fig trees are remarkably tolerant—coping with drought, pruning, and even a bit of neglect.

Best Fig Tree Varieties for Kiwi Gardens

If you’re unsure where to buy fig trees and which types to choose, it helps to know your options. Classic fig varieties like Fig 'Oakura' are popular for their reliable crops and melt-in-your-mouth sweetness. Fig 'Flanders' is another top choice, producing medium to large fruit with a rich, honeyed flavour. For those who prefer a dark-skinned fig, Fig 'Black Malta' boasts deep purple fruit with succulent, rosy flesh—perfect for eating fresh or drying. Gardeners after an early harvest might opt for Fig 'Brunswick', an early ripening, robust tree. For something truly unique, Fig 'Bidwell Estate' offers history and heritage with every bite.

Tips for Planting and Growing Your Fig Tree

Once you’ve decided where to buy fig trees and chosen your variety, plant your new tree in a sunny, sheltered spot with free-draining soil. Figs thrive on a little neglect and benefit from a trim in winter to keep them compact and productive. They’re ideal for espaliering, growing in containers, or letting loose in a warm garden corner.
