Phormium cookianum

5 from 1 customers

Phormium cookianum, commonly known as Mountain Flax or Wharariki, is a graceful New Zealand native valued for its arching green leaves and tall flower spikes. It typically grows 1–1.5 metres tall and wide, making it ideal for borders, mass plantings, or coastal gardens. In summer, it produces yellow to orange tubular flowers that attract birds and pollinators. Hardy and tolerant of wind, salt, and poor soils, Wharariki thrives in full sun to part shade.

What Makes Wharariki Flax Special

Phormium cookianum is more slender and graceful than its cousin, Phormium tenax. Its lush, light green leaves arch down from the base, forming soft, fountain-like clumps that can reach up to 1.5 metres tall. Throughout late spring and summer, towering flower stems rise above the foliage, bearing greenish-yellow blooms that supply food for tūī, bellbirds, and other native wildlife. Unlike some larger flax varieties, wharariki flax is ideal for smaller gardens, mixed borders, or even large containers.

Planting and Care Tips

One of the best things about wharariki flax is its proven resilience. It thrives in coastal gardens, windy exposures, and tolerates damp or dry soils, provided there is reasonable drainage. Plant wharariki flax in full sun for the best leaf colour and form, although it will also cope with dappled shade. When planting, space these flaxes about a metre apart to allow the leaves to fully develop that iconic arch. Mulch in spring, and remove spent flower stalks to keep your plants looking tidy.

Landscaping Ideas with Wharariki Flax

Wharariki flax is wonderfully flexible in design. Use it en masse to stabilise banks, define driveways, or soften hard landscape lines. For textural contrast, combine it with bold foliage varieties such as Phormium 'Evening Glow', whose bronzed tones pop against the wharariki’s green. Dwarf forms like Phormium 'Green Dwarf' and Phormium 'Emerald Gem' make striking companions in contemporary plantings.

For a truly dynamic native look, consider blending wharariki flax with stylish grasses and companions such as Dianella caerulea (Paroo Lily) or the richly coloured Cordyline Cabernet. You can also experiment with statement varieties like Phormium 'Jester', Phormium 'Surfer', or classic Phormium 'Veneer' for extra depth and contrast in your planting scheme. If soft green hues are your goal, Phormium 'Emerald Green' pairs beautifully with the lighter shades of wharariki flax.

Why Choose Wharariki Flax?

Wharariki flax is a low-maintenance, drought-hardy, and long-lived addition to any New Zealand garden. Not only does it offer beauty and year-round interest, but it also provides food and shelter for native birds and insects. If you’re searching for a resilient and visually striking native plant, wharariki flax is a choice you—and your local wildlife—will appreciate for years to come.
