Why Choose Westringia 'Mundi' in New Zealand Gardens?

Westringia 'Mundi' stands out for its ability to withstand New Zealand’s challenging environmental conditions. Its tightly-clipped appearance, lush grey-green foliage, and soft white to pale blue flowers make it a versatile option for both urban and coastal gardens. If you're seeking a hardy groundcover that suppresses weeds, controls erosion, and looks great all year, Westringia 'Mundi' is a top choice.

As a member of the Westringia family, 'Mundi' shares many favourable traits with other forms such as Westringia fruticosa and Westringia Grey Box, including salt tolerance and low water requirements. However, 'Mundi' is particularly valued for its dense, spreading habit that creates a uniform, mounding effect without the need for constant trimming.

Planting and Using Westringia 'Mundi'

Westringia 'Mundi' is an ideal choice for mass plantings, garden edging, driveway borders, and as an attractive alternative to traditional lawn where mowing is a challenge. Its maximum height around 30 cm and a spread up to 1.5 metres makes it perfect for bank stabilisation and large, sweeping groundcover schemes. It pairs beautifully with companions like Ajuga 'Pink Elf', Lithodora 'Magic Carpet', and Cotoneaster microphyllus (Small Leaf Cotoneaster) for layered interest and colour.

Plant in full sun or part shade in well-drained soil for the best results. Westringia 'Mundi' is adaptable to both clay and sandy soils and tolerates moderate frost and exposed coastal winds – perfect for harsh New Zealand sites.

Ongoing Care and Related Varieties

Once established, Westringia 'Mundi' requires very little water and thrives on neglect. Occasional pruning will keep it tidy and can encourage stronger flowering. Use a slow-release fertiliser in spring for a boost.

If you love the reliability of 'Mundi', consider adding other Westringia varieties for diversity and structure in your planting scheme. Westringia Wynyabbie Highlight, Westringia Lilac and Lace, and Westringia Aussie Box each offer unique foliage colours, flower tones, and growth forms, letting you design cohesive, yet varied, landscapes.
