What Makes Westringia fruticosa mundi Unique?

Westringia fruticosa mundi is a compact, prostrate selection of the coastal rosemary. Reaching just 30cm in height with a spread of up to 1.5 metres, it’s especially popular where space is at a premium. Unlike taller forms such as Westringia fruticosa, Mundi hugs the ground, making it perfect for front-of-border planting, low hedging, spillover edges, or as a weed suppressant in mass plantings.

Planting and Care

Thriving in exposed, sandy, or even heavy clay soils, westringia fruticosa mundi asks little of the gardener. It prefers full sun but will tolerate partial shade. Once established, it’s exceptionally drought-tolerant, reducing the need for irrigation. Routine pruning, once or twice a year after flowering, will keep it tidy and encourage dense growth.

When planting, incorporate compost or well-rotted manure for best results. Excellent drainage is key—this is a true coastal native. Westringia fruticosa mundi is also a fantastic choice for seaside gardens due to its salt tolerance.

Where to Use Westringia fruticosa mundi

Westringia fruticosa mundi is highly versatile. Plant across slopes for erosion control, under trees where grass struggles, or alongside driveways and paths for a neat, attractive finish. It pairs beautifully with structured shrubs like Westringia Grey Box or as a softer understorey beneath Banksia Roller Coaster and other hardy groundcovers such as Myoporum parvifolium (Creeping Myoporum) or Grevillea prostrata Aurea.

Other Westringia Varieties to Consider

For those who like the form and resilience of westringia fruticosa mundi but want a range of foliage colours, textures, or growth habits, you might also enjoy:

Complementary Groundcovers

If you’re planning a mass planting or coastal garden, consider mixing westringia fruticosa mundi with other tough groundcovers for year-round colour and texture, like Rosmarinus 'Santa Barbara' (Rosemary Santa Barbara) and Pachysandra axillaris.

Whether you’re landscaping a commercial space or perfecting your home garden retreat, westringia fruticosa mundi remains a reliable, good-looking choice for New Zealand conditions. Its low, spreading habit, low water requirements and soft grey-green foliage make it an essential plant for modern, sustainable gardens.
