Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Popular Weeping Cherry Tree Varieties in New Zealand

When selecting a weeping cherry, it's important to consider factors such as mature height, blossom colour, and timing, as different weeping cherry tree varieties offer unique attributes. The most commonly grown weeping cherries in New Zealand include:

Prunus 'Accolade'

The Prunus Accolade is a reliable and hardy weeping variety, beloved for its semi-double, light pink flowers that bloom abundantly in early spring. Its tidy, arching habit and vibrant autumn colour make it a year-round garden favourite. Perfect for small spaces or as a specimen tree, this weeping cherry thrives in well-drained soil and sunny positions.

Snow Fountains (Prunus 'Snofozam')

Another classic among weeping cherry tree varieties, 'Snow Fountains' features pure white blossoms that drape elegantly from slender weeping branches. This compact tree is ideal for courtyards, entryways, or as a feature in mixed beds, bringing an unexpected touch of grace to even the smallest urban gardens.

Pink Cascade Weeping Cherry

Sought after for its dramatic, deep pink flow of blooms, the Pink Cascade delights with its early-spring display. The branches of this weeping cherry create a living fountain effect, perfect for planting over pathways, water features, or reflective gardens where its beauty can be fully appreciated.

Pairing Weeping Cherries with Fruit-Bearing Varieties

For gardeners seeking both ornamental value and edible harvests, consider complementing your weeping cherry with other cherry varieties such as Cherry Rainier, Cherry Dawson, Cherry Modesto, or Cherry Griotella Frumi. Planting a mix of these trees allows you to enjoy a tapestry of spring blossoms followed by a bounty of summer fruit.

How to Grow and Care for Weeping Cherry Trees

All weeping cherry tree varieties thrive best in full sun and rich, free-draining soil. They're relatively low-maintenance, but benefit from regular watering during dry periods and a light application of fertiliser in early spring. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the elegant weeping shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Watch for aphids and caterpillars—most problems are minor and can be addressed with natural controls.

Create a Show-Stopping Landscape

Incorporating weeping cherry tree varieties in your garden brings a sense of movement and romance that few other trees can match. Whether positioned as a single accent or planted in a row for dramatic effect, these beautiful cherries promise years of breathtaking spring celebrations. Explore our selection of Prunus Accolade and other outstanding cherry trees today to find the perfect addition for your outdoor oasis.
