Why Choose a Weeping Cherry Tree?

Weeping cherry trees (Prunus spp.) are prized for their architectural beauty and breathtaking springtime display. Each year, their drooping branches become festooned with masses of blossoms, creating a romantic, waterfall effect. In autumn, their leaves put on a warm show of golds and reds before winter’s sculptural silhouette. These features, along with tolerance to our varied climates, make the weeping cherry tree an inspired choice for front yards, borders, or as a signature feature in larger landscapes.

Planting and Care Tips

A weeping cherry tree thrives best in a sunny position with well-draining soil. Dig a hole at least twice as wide as the root ball and mix in some well-rotted compost for a healthy start. Water in well after planting and mulch to retain moisture. While established trees are fairly drought-tolerant, young trees will benefit from regular watering during their first two summers. Prune lightly after flowering to maintain the classic umbrella shape and remove any spent or tangled branches.

Landscape Uses for Weeping Cherries

The weeping cherry’s unique growth habit makes it an ideal focal point in small gardens or larger landscapes alike. It creates seasonal interest near patios, entryways, ponds, and along driveways. Underplant with spring bulbs or low-growing ground covers for a show-stopping transformation each year.
