Cherry Dawson

The 'Dawson' Cherry produces large, black coloured fruit in summer. The fruit has red flesh that is sweet with a lovely flavour. It requires another variety planted alongside (“a pollinator”) to produce good fruit yields, such as 'Early Rivers' or 'Stella'. This deciduous tree grows upright to about 5 m tall and 3 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. Cherries require a cold winter to set fruit, hence they are less suited to regions where winters tend to be mild. The 'Dawson' Cherry is commonly used for fruit production and makes an attractive tree in its own right.

Why Choose a Weeping Cherry Blossom Tree NZ?

Weeping cherry blossom trees are beloved for their graceful, arching canopy and breathtaking spring displays. Adaptable to a variety of soils and tolerating New Zealand’s diverse climates, these trees are perfect for both rural gardens and urban courtyards. They typically reach a manageable height of 3–4 metres, making them ideal for smaller spaces yet impactful as focal points in larger garden designs. Their light, airy blossoms attract pollinators, supporting biodiversity in your garden, while easy maintenance makes them suitable for beginner and seasoned gardeners alike.

Best Planting and Care Tips

Success with your weeping cherry blossom tree NZ begins with site selection. Choose a sunny spot with good drainage, as these trees thrive with at least 6 hours of sunlight a day. Prepare the ground by adding compost or well-rotted manure to enrich your soil. Regular watering in their first growing season helps your tree establish strong roots, but mature weeping cherries require little ongoing attention aside from a light spring prune to maintain their shape. Mulch around the base (but not touching the trunk) to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Creating a Flowering Feature Garden

Imagine underplanting your weeping cherry blossom tree NZ with spring bulbs like bluebells or daffodils for an extra burst of spring colour. Mass planting or positioning alongside other flowering trees also creates a stunning seasonal view. For further inspiration, consider mixing weeping cherries with upright ornamental varieties, such as the Prunus Accolade, which produces vibrant pink blossoms in early spring.

Pair With Fruiting Cherry Varieties

Looking to expand your garden with additional cherry varieties? Alongside your ornamental weeping cherry blossom tree NZ, consider productive fruiting types like Cherry Rainier for sweet yellow fruit, Cherry Dawson for classic dark-red cherries, Cherry Modesto, or the tangy Cherry Griotella Frumi. Combining both flowering and fruiting cherries creates a diverse orchard with interest through multiple seasons.
