Why Grow Vinca Perennial Plants in New Zealand Gardens

Vinca perennial varieties are renowned for their toughness and ability to flourish in tricky environments. Whether you have dry, shady spots under trees or need hardy cover for banks and slopes, vinca perennial will quickly establish and spread, forming a dense mat that holds soil and deters weeds. These plants are also drought-tolerant once established, withstanding periods of low rainfall—perfect for New Zealand conditions.

Stunning Varieties of Vinca Perennial

There is a vinca perennial to suit every garden style. Explore versatile varieties such as Vinca major, known for its vigorous growth and large blue flowers, or the compact Vinca minor with smaller evergreen leaves and a refined look for borders. If you love crisp white blooms, Vinca minor White offers a cool contrast against darker foliage. For unique splashes of colour, Vinca Elizabeth Cran brings deep pink flowers to brighten shaded corners, while Vinca major Variegata (Greater Periwinkle Plant) delights with its creamy-edged leaves and classic blue blossoms.

Planting and Caring for Vinca Perennial

Plant your vinca perennial in spring or autumn, spacing the plants generously to allow room for them to spread. While vinca perennials are undemanding, they thrive in well-drained soils with added organic matter. Water regularly in the first season, but once established, these plants need little attention. Occasional trimming in late winter encourages denser growth and keeps pathways clear.

Where to Use Vinca Perennial in Your Garden

Vinca perennial excels as an underplanting around trees, along shaded pathways, or spilling gracefully over retaining walls. The trailing stems root as they go, quickly covering bare spots and stabilising soil. Use alongside other shade-loving perennials or as a low-maintenance lawn alternative in hard-to-mow spaces.
